REVIEW OF BIKE RIDE ON MAY 21, 2007

The turnout was 38 people split between Elmhurst Ski Club, Four Winds Ski Club and the Nomads Ski Club.  Trip                                                             leaders, Rick and Christy Burke, arrived early and the other 36 came in around the announced start time of 11:00 AM.  The  weather was, well, dreary and 44 degrees!  It did warm up to 56 that day but most of our riders never took off their jackets, sweaters, hats and helmets!  Some even begged for more.  Jerry from the Nomads had the bike pump and it was well used.  About 25 of the crew headed out at 11:30 AM with Christy Burke staying behind to watch the cars and shelter.

The ride to the gardens was only a little bit cold and drizzly but not all the time.  Unfortunately the clouds never did move on their way so the gardens were not as glowing as in past years where we had bright sunshine.  Roughly 1:30 PM various members of the group rolled back in.  They were greeted by a special guest, Victor Starykowicz, who had arrived in the meantime.  Bill Dennis of the Four Winds got the first grill going and it was hot and ready for a whole lot of brats and dogs.  Tom Long from Four Winds and Nomads, got the other grill going at just the right time for the second group.  Everyone was gathering there not just for food but for warmth.  The sharing table was a big hit.  We had fruit salad, potato and pasta salad (2 kinds) cake, deviled eggs, cookies even homemade ones and pretty much any kind of mustard you might want.  This sharing thing really works!

At about 4:00 PM  the clean up began and the packing up. We vacated the grove at about 5:00 PM leaving it super clean.

       Thanks for coming out everyone!

        CARDBOARD BOAT REGATTA:

A little water never hurt anyone – except, perhaps, for the Wicked Witch of the West.  And those of us who ran the risk of getting wet were in for quite a show at The Great Cardboard Boat Race.  Luckily, despite predictions to the contrary, the weather held, and everyone who went was in for day filled with side-splitting laughter as we watched people attempt to stay afloat in boats made out of cardboard.

The race consisted of three categories: cardboard only, cardboard with metal propellers such as bicycle pedals, and “instant boats” which were designed and built on the spot.  The most popular boats were made in the shape of canoes or quasi-kayaks.  But one of the more original boats was designed to hold up to approximately 12 people.  Can you imagine, a cardboard boat, floating in the water, holding that many people?  Well, it didn’t.  Tragically, the boat sank just before reaching the finish line.

The awards (named by me) included, among others, the “Vogue Award” for the prettiest boat, the “Pride of the Race” for the most creative design, and, of course the “Titanic Award” for the most spectacular sinking.  Competition was fierce.  First prize for originality went to the Grave Digger, a boat modeled after the infamous monster truck in celebration of its 25th anniversary.  The boat was so immense that it took more than a handful of people to carry down to the water.  In the opposite category, first prize for ugliest went to a raft designed to look like a junk yard.  Or perhaps a bedroom floor?  The raft was, after all, designed by kids…

Entry in the Race was open to anyone and everyone.  The captains and crews ranged from age 3 through 60, and consisted of family members, friends, and drinking buddies, all challenging each other in every category of competition imaginable.  It truly was an event like no other!

FOURTH OF JULY PARTY:

We want to thank Stefanie for hosting an excellent party at her house.  We had a great night for a cook out, and ate out on her deck.  The hamburgers and the corn were especially good. We enjoyed the many salads.  After it got dark, we all headed over to the park to watch the spectacular fire works.  We had a very nice walk about a mile to the park.  We needed that to work off all the food we had for dinner. Stefanie went earlier to the park to save us a place, and we had front row seats to see the fireworks. Nice job!!!

Brian said the fireworks were better than the ones he saw in Chicago the night before.  They were very loud and very exciting to watch the grand finality.  There were lots of people in attendances.  We got to hike on the Prairie Path on the walk back to Stefanie’s

We could have been offered a ride in Pete’s convertible. Ops! It only has two seats. Nice red car!  We all had a great time. Good to see a good turn out.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE OLD BALLGAME!

On July 21, Elmers got to see the Kane County Cougars vs. Dayton Dragons game.  It was a very enjoyable game, but the Cougars came up short in the score due to all the errors they made. They did make a come back, but then they shot themselves in the toe with errors. The weather was perfect, and our group sat on the grassy area down by the first base line. I was not aware, that sitting down on the first base line we had to battle the sun in your eyes.  The fireworks were very good and the marching band performance was excellent. We all had a good time.
